Lucky bamboo filter

Lucky bamboo filter

Postby KittyKat » Fri Jun 06, 2008 6:23 pm

I came across this sometime ago and was wondering if anyone has tried or heard of anything similar? It works in a very similar way to that of aquatic plants by using the nitrates from the water as they pass through the roots. In a similar fashion, mulm can be used as fertilizer if the roots will also filter it out before the water is passed back into the aquarium. What do you guys think about this way of filtration?

I think with a paludarium this would be relatively easy to achieve as you can easily have plants with their roots dangling into the water, thus removing the nitrates. Good plants to use in this case would be the semi-aquatic ones like some species of Hygrophila and the swamp/water loving plants like certain grasses. This should work quite nicely in helping with the transition from water to land without separating it into two individual halves.

I am interested! How can the bamboo filter water from the ground so that you can use it again. If it is indeed effective in the filtration process of the aquarium water, why is it that it is not popularly for sale in the market? I like the idea of using natural elements to filter dirty water from my aquarium.
